Top Tips for Job Hunting in Lagos

The job hunt is something every graduate in Lagos has to go through. When you bring the current economic situation in the country into consideration, it may start to feel a bit daunting. Especially if your daddy does not know somebody that knows somebody.

It can be very discouraging and wearing on the psyche. But before you get that “we are pleased to offer you the position” email, there are some things you may have to go through; submitting your cv, waiting to be contacted, writing aptitude tests, waiting to see if you passed, and multiple interviews.

Here are some tips to help with the process:

  • Make use of the Internet.

There are loads of job search websites out there now. Gone are the days of graduates walking around with their cv in a file, being beaten by the sun and the rain with their shoes wearing out.

  • Make sure the company you are applying to is legit.

Do a quick Internet search to make sure that the company actually exists and that you are not just going to be wasting your time and transport money. Also, if you  put your contact details up on the wrong site, you may be getting frustrating spam messages for a long time to come. To avoid this, make sure that the websites are legit as well.

  • If you get an invite from a company you didn’t apply to, don’t go.

If you’ve been looking for a job for a while, chances are that you are on about a dozen of these job search sites. Not all of them are secure, and random people may get your details from there and try to use it for different things, from the annoying: inviting you for an interview, only for it to be an invitation to join some network marketing scheme; to the outright dangerous, luring you somewhere to be kidnapped.

  • Prepare very well for tests and interviews

Once you get a legitimate invite for an aptitude test or interview, you want to be very prepared because they are few and far between and you are competing against other candidates who also want the job as badly as you do.

You are welcome to share your job search tips and experiences with us in the comments.

  1. Nice article tope, but this isn’t quite detailed, more like the obvious things we hear. How about properly packaging your CV, adding value to your self in the main time, again apart from internet, you should brace up and tell close random people your problem, you can just chill and be applying online, some get lucky, some don’t, and personally i feel internet is the hardest, cause of the competition.
