Lagosians spend years of their lives stuck in traffic in Lagos. How do I know? I estimated. I didn’t want to calculate because the actual number would probably depress me.
You can calculate if you like; over the last 3-5 years, the time you spent in Lagos traffic. Commuting from your house to your job, morning and evening alone would probably add up to almost a year. Now, factor in miscellaneous errands, then Saturday and Sunday traffic.
But this is not a maths class. I’m here to tell you how to make the time go faster when you are once again stuck in endless traffic that you’ll get to the front of and not see anything that was causing it.
1.) Think about what you would be doing at that very moment if you weren’t stuck in traffic
If it’s morning, you could probably have had a proper breakfast, worked out, or even gotten an extra hour of sleep. If it’s evening, you could probably be hanging out with friends, or at the gym.
See? Traffic is the reason why you’re so fat. The next time people say “ahan you fat o” say “na Lagos traffic o.” Special life hacks from Temitope™
2.) Consider suicide.
Think about it, but don’t actually do it because it’s a crime and a sin. So you can look longingly at the waters of the lagoon, or consider driving under a trailer, but eventually the traffic will move along and you’ll live to suffer another day.
3.) Go over your to-do list
Whether it’s on your phone, written down, or in your head, go over all the tasks which you have to complete, but which you’ll probably be too tired and cranky to actually do properly due to the hours you spent in Lagos traffic.
Honestly, this should have been number 1, I don’t know what I was thinking. But if you are a Lagosian, complaining should be second nature to you by now. God knows there’s no dearth of things to complain about, the traffic being arguably the worst of them all.
5.) Go over your life plans and bucket list
The things you want to do with your life like travel, have great adventures, a real social life, a functional relationship, etc. All things you would have time to achieve if you didn’t spend half your life in Lagos traffic.
