4 Things you Shouldn’t do at Owambes

Hehe… I know you might have started thinking about some things that I could possibly write on this topic, as soon as you saw the title of this article.

Yes, we all know that we need to have proper etiquette in different places we find ourselves or go.

It is important to have the right attitude and behave in the right way in different places and situations. Most people love ‘owambes’ in Lagos, and they always look forward to going to one. However, it is important to note that some behaviours or attitudes need to be avoided when at ‘owambes’, and some of such behaviours are:

  1. Fighting for Food: I know how it can look like when you arrive at a party for hours and other people have been served, but you haven’t been served. I know how it feels when you see food passing by left and right, but no one is looking towards your side to drop one on your table; even if they mistakenly look at your side, they avoid eye contacts as much as possible. Choi! However, would you want to fight because of that? You shouldn’t. Remember you went to rejoice with someone and how will the person feel if he or she finds out that you are fighting because of food?! And so, one of the things you can do is to quietly stand up and locate a family member of the celebrant/groom/bride, etc. or an active participant in the planning of the party and tell him or her about your situation. When you attend weddings, please don’t tell the bride or groom you have not eaten, tell someone else who can help you get food, don’t disturb the bride or groom.
  2. Asking for multiple rounds of food: you don’t have to eat multiple rounds of food just because you see people carrying them around at a party. Be courteous and eat moderately. You don’t have to ask for rice, then amala, then Chinese food, etc.
  3. Fighting for Souvenirs: I know how it feels for people to share souvenirs to others and some don’t get to you. Come to think of it, how many of the souvenirs you collect in parties do you really use? And if you actually use all of them, you still don’t have to fight because of souvenirs. If you don’t get souvenirs at one party, that doesn’t mean you won’t get it at another party next time.
  4. Dining Etiquette: just because there are a lot of things you might be opportuned to eat doesn’t mean you should eat anyhow. Be courteous and respect others at the table with you. This is not about forming, it’s about having etiquette!
